Hosted by the Williamsons.
Details: March 17th Club Trip to the 2018 Southern Farm Days in Lake Waccamaw.
The Southern Farm Days Festival directly benefits the Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina, specifically the Lake Waccamaw location. A few members attended this event last year For more information on the event visit the events website. https://www.southernfarmdays.com /
I encourage you all to look at the web site link; those of us that go will get a chance to step back in time; some of us may find toys, household items or tools that we once used. The event is held at the Lake Waccamaw Boys & Girls Home a short drive from Whiteville. Hopefully this year the weather will be more agreeable. Last year it was rainy and cold.
The Plan: The Wilmington group meets and departs from the Leland Hardees at 10 AM.
The Southport group meets at Freemans Grill on Highway 211 in Bolton by 10:45 AM.
Details: The Wilmington group will caravan from the Hardees in Leland Saturday morning (March 17) and drive to Freemans Grill in Bolton on Highway 211 to meet up with the Southport Miata group. After getting together, we will proceed to the event traveling on the Sam Potts Highway (old highway 74/76) thru the cross-roads at Lake Waccamaw and then make a right turn into the parking area at the Boys and Girls Home. Parking at the event is in a freshly mowed field; a short walk or “ride the tram” to the entrance, and pay the $7.50 entry fee.
Once into the event there is much to see. A short list includes tractors big & small, farm implements, campfire cooking, old tools, petting zoo and farm animals, flea market, wild west show, and festival food.
One of the biggest events is the “tractor pull” competition. The driver ranges from pros to kids that require blocks on the tractor pedals. They are just learning the art of the “Pull”. There is also a tractor parade and lawn mower racing.
After we leave and return to the present there will be a a short drive (15 minutes) to Whiteville. Arrangements have been made for a late lunch at a large Mexican restaurant in their private dining room. The restaurant is “Panchitos” (on the main drag at, 515 N. JK Powell Blvd, Whiteville NC 910-640-6680). It used to be an old chain steakhouse.
Last year the meal was great. It was very tasty and nicely priced. I am sure that they will have some beer in “green” bottles for those who must celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
Since the Southern Farm Days is mostly outside on grassy fields or dirt pathways plan on wearing some appropriate, sturdy footwear. We wore our hiking boots last year; we just changed our shoes in the parking lot. Check the weather for coats and hats.
RSVP is required by Saturday, March 10. Also, please let us know which location you will meet up at.
